We visited Angel Island in SF with professor and author Yingying Chang张盈盈 and her husband Shaojin Chang 张绍进who are parents of renowned author Iris Chang 张纯如 and members of the Society of Heart's Delight over the weekend. Between 1910 and 1940, the Angel Island Immigration Station served as an immigration and deportation site, and about half a million immigrants from 80 countries were processed, detained, and/or interrogated here. It employed discriminatory policies to prevent Asians from immigrating. Many Asian immigrants were detained under oppressive conditions, from two weeks to two years, before they were allowed to enter the United States. History can be disturbing or even horrifying, but learning about it is essential to our learning and improvement.
