Nonprofit Founder / Mentorship Enthusiast, Sunnyvale
After many years working in Silicon Valley, I’ve come to realize the immense value of mentorship in personal growth. This hit home through my son’s journey. His previous school’s heavy focus on academics limited his development. With the guidance of mentors at a new school, his academic performance and skills grew, and he was eventually accepted into Carnegie Mellon University. This experience inspired me to create CP Mentorship.
I co-founded CP Mentorship with two high school students. Our mission is simple: education, experience, and exposure. Many Asian parents focus too much on grades and neglect overall development, especially skills like problem-solving and social influence. Traditional culture also tends to discourage self-promotion, which we aim to change.
At CP Mentorship, we encourage students to develop innovative ideas in fields like AI, data science, history, public arts, water conservation, and environmental justice, while leading and executing their own projects. I actively help them increase the visibility of these projects. For example, a recent AI project presentation at Google attracted a lot of attention, with a lively crowd. Through these projects, the students not only learn to solve real-world problems but also develop leadership and teamwork skills, experiences that will have a lasting impact on their future.
It’s been incredibly rewarding to see these kids grow and succeed. I’ve also noticed a shift in many Asian parents’ mindsets. They begin to support their children’s passions beyond just academics. I’m excited to see where CP Mentorship goes from here, and I can’t wait to see more kids thrive and grow into well-rounded individuals.
