Clay Zhu

Attorney, Pleasanton

In August 2020, former President Trump issued an Executive Order banning the use of WeChat, which is the most popular messaging and social media app for Chinese-speaking immigrants. I organized and started a lawsuit against the President. The court ruled in our favor, and my friends and I could continue using WeChat. The case resulted in a lot of publicity and media coverage. One of the most memorable reactions I got is a call from an immigrant friend who used to be a high-school teacher in China before he retired. He was dumbfounded at the fact that a judge at the lowest-level court had the power to issue a binding order against the U.S. President. An average person suing the highest leader of the country and winning was something unthinkable in China. I had to explain that the highest authority in this country is the Constitution, not the President. And there is something called the “rule of law” which applies to everyone including the President, which is a reason why so many immigrants including myself have chosen to come to this country.
